Are you working on big project with a tight deadline? And too bored of creating the same diagram flow over and over? Well, Creately has the solution for it. Did you know that you can add/open your diagrams as an object library? If yes you know the drill. If not here’s the best practice.
You can now add/open any of your projects as a Creately object library. It means you can add diagrams to a project and then open that project as a shape library to use within other diagrams. For example if your project is based on a swimlane flow chart and you need to create dozens of diagrams, you can create a template diagram first and open it as an object in the library. Then all you need to do is drag and drop it onto the canvas from the object library.
Alternatively you might be creating UI mockups and have certain layouts you use a lot. You can create those layouts once in a template project and then open it and re-use those layouts in new UI mockups. This makes it create for working with clients.
Follow these easy steps to open your project as a library:
- First thing first you should login to your Creately account. In the dashboard select a project on the left that you would like to open as an object library. You cannot open/use your Home Project as the library. If you need to use a diagram which is included in the Home Project, you should move it to another project you want to use as a library project.
In the screenshot below I have selected the “Diagram Generalizing Process” project as my library project.
- Once you have selected the project from the dashboard, you should see the “Open as Library” button along the top left becomes available. Click this to open the project as a library in the editor.
The screenshot below highlights the “Open as Library” button.
- You will be then directed to the diagram canvas and you will see the diagrams opened as a shape library to the left of the diagram canvas. You can identify the libraries that have been opened from a project because they have a little folder icon to the right of the library name.
The screenshot below shows the “Diagram Generalizing Process” project open as a library in the diagram editor.
- You can now use the diagrams from the template project by simply dragging the library shape diagrams onto a new or existing diagram canvas.
Any new diagrams you create that will use the template diagrams from the template library should be created outside of the template project otherwise the new diagrams you create will appear in the library which will probably cause confusion.
